On December 17th and 18th, Santa and his elves made a special trip to distribute gifts to children at Central Pre-K and Wildcat Way Pre-K, both schools in the Bentonville district. This is the second year that United Way NWA has been able to participate in Christmas with the kiddos at these schools. Children who attend Central Pre-K and Wildcat Way Pre-K must live in homes where the income level is below the poverty line. Many children who live in poverty do not have the opportunity to open Christmas gifts on Christmas morning, so our team was excited to be able to celebrate the holidays with 80+ kiddos before they left for Christmas vacation!
Since early September, the team at our Gift in Kind Warehouse had been setting toys aside for this event. We had more than 8 corporate volunteer teams who came in to sort these toys and wrap each and every gift! After hours of wrapping and using more than 30 rolls of wrapping paper and several bows, our volunteers wrapped more than 80 Christmas gifts for these kids! We even had a team from Bank of Arkansas who generously volunteered to dress as elves at both events…home-made outfits and all! All of the work and preparation was well worth it on the days of the event. Seeing the joy and excitement of the kids’ faces as they sat with Santa was more of a gift to us and our team than any present.
This event was so much fun for our team and was a true reminder of why the work that we do is so important in our community. Every child deserves to feel the joy that these 80 kids were able to experience, and every donor, volunteer, and advocate deserves to know what it feels like to make a difference in the life of a child because there is no greater gift than the gift of giving!
