What
is the $25 Grocery Challenge?
The Live United: $25 Grocery Challenge is an initiative
sponsored by the United Way of Northwest Arkansas and the
Northwest Arkansas Food Bank to raise awareness around the
struggles low-income families face when they are qualified
for food stamps.
The $25 Grocery Challenge will run from February 23 through
March 6, and consist of two parts. The first part runs from
February 23 through March 1 and participants will be asked
to spend no more than $25 per person for a week on food, the
average amount a person in Arkansas receives through the
food stamp program. The second part consists of a
community-wide food drive which will take place March 2-6.
The first is to Challenge community leaders to experience
what it’s like to live on $25 per person for a week and keep
a journal of their experience on United Way’s blog,
liveunitednwa.blogspot.com. As part of the challenge, we
want participants to take into consideration the additional
challenge of eating healthy on only $25 per week. The
staples of a healthy diet, such as fresh fruits and
vegetables, are usually not an option when you can only
spend $25 per person on all of your meals for the week.
The second part of the initiative is to have those that
agree to be a part of the Challenge advocate within their
workplace, and throughout the community, for people to
donate food to help fill the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank.
